Phi Kirby is primarily responsible for the management of National Grid's extensive portfolio of non-operational land and properties. Phil reports directly to Edward Astle, Group Director, Telecommunications.
National Grid Property is a wholly owned subsidiary of National Grid, the seventh largest utility. Its Managing Director Phil Kirby is primarily responsible for the management of the group's extensive portfolio of non-operational land and properties in the United Kingdom, much of which is contaminated from the historic manufacture of gas.
Phil Kirby trained as a civil and structural engineer and is a chartered engineer. From trainee draftsman at Holst to Structural Engineer at William Press, he became the West Country's Area Manager for Mears. Its Nuttall buyout in 1984 brought Kirby to London and to projects such as the Thames Barrier Scheme, Hillingdon By-Pass and Stockley Park.
Much of Phil's work in heavy civil engineering as a contractor was in marine, road and bridge construction. As a client developer his achievements include Broadgate, Embankment Place, Chiswick Park and Loughborough and Leeds City Office Park.
Following four years with Stanhope, Phil, was appointed Construction Director at National Grid Property (then British Gas Properties) in 1992 and became General Manager in 1999.
Phil is a Member of the institute of Structural Engineers, an Associate Member of the Institute of Civil Engineers, a Member of the Urban Task Force, Chairman of Claire (Contaminated Land Applications in Real Environments) and Chairman of exSite.
In 2000, Phil was award an OBE for the impact his team of contaminated land practitioners has had on standards for reclaiming land.
