The Oystermouth Road gasworks was one of the last prime development areas in Swansea city centre. Following completion of a £1.3 million remediation programme in October 1998, the UK's largest food retailers, Tesco, opened a new landmark store in February 2000. The 45,000 ft2 store is open 24-hours a day, has a 102-seat cafeé, a piazza, and offers internet ordering and delivery. The development has brought hundreds of jobs to Swansea and has regenerated an area that had lain derelict for many years.
