The Planning team deals with all aspects of the town planning system affecting National Grid Property sites and, in some instances, National Grid sites.
When a site is no longer needed for operational purposes a planning appraisal is carried out to assess its redevelopment potential. In appropriate cases, a planning application is made, which has to address a broad range of issues that may be relevant, such as transportation, land supply, design, contamination, ecology, archaeology, flooding and other environmental issues. Planning applications may be taken to appeal.
The team's main role is to add value to sites by obtaining planning permission for development and to improve or protect redevelopment opportunities regulated by policies and proposals set out in local authority development plans which reflect local community needs.
Development plans set land use policies and proposals for a five to ten year period and they directly affect whether planning permission should be granted. The team monitors emerging development plans and also policy statements at national and regional level and takes action to protect the company's site-specific or general property interests.
In addition, the team handles consultations on development proposals and planning briefs and general matters covered by town planning legislation, such as Listed Buildings, Scheduled Ancient Monuments and Tree Preservation Orders. The team also advises and acts for other parts of the business.
