Bioremediation is an on site clean up technology, which deploys natural soil bacteria to break down contaminants. Bioremediation has the capacity in the right circumstances to limit the need for landfill disposal, saving on energy costs and reducing disruption to local communities.
Used on a number of former gasworks sites, including the East Greenwich peninsula, the bioremediation process involves mixing contaminated soil with a nutrient and then loading the mixture into beds. Irrigation pipes and polyethylene covers are then used to ensure perfect conditions to allow the bacteria to convert the contaminants into carbon dioxide and water. As a result, after validation testing, cleaned material can be reused, reducing the need to import clean fill.
