Soil Vapour Extraction is an in situ remediation process used a vacuum to draw air through the ground, thereby inducing aerobic biodegradation.
The 300 acre Greenwich peninsula, which includes the Millennium Dome, was cleaned up using a combination of bioremediation, groundwater treatment and soil vapour extraction (SVE). The SVE process - the largest to-date in the UK - won National Grid contractors, Fluor Daniel GTI, the chemical engineering industry's premier environment and safety award, the Cremer and Warner medal.
